Store Overview from Target.com

A Differentiated Approach

The first Target store opened in Roseville, Minnesota, in 1962. Its trendy merchandise at affordable prices launched a new era in discount retailing. This “T-1” store was easy to shop, attractive and always clean. It served as the prototype for every Target store opened since then, and it changed how consumers think about discount shopping.

Today, Target operates nearly 1,770 stores in 49 states, including more than 250 SuperTarget® stores that offer an upscale grocery shopping experience. In addition to the photo processing centers, pharmacies and Food Avenue® restaurants found in almost every Target, SuperTarget stores include in-store bakery, deli, meat and produce sections.

Expect More Food for Less

To provide even more convenience and value, Target is responding to guests’ wants and needs with a new store layout that offers more fresh food in our general merchandise stores. This new layout offers basic essentials including fresh produce and fresh meat; comprehensive dry, dairy and frozen food assortments; and an expanded selection of convenience foods in snacks, beverages and candy. This expanded food selection is now available in more than 800 stores across the country, with more rolling out this year.

Smart in the City

This year, Target will open our first CityTarget stores – which cater to the urban guest – in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle, with more to follow. CityTarget stores will offer commuters, tourists and urban dwellers the same convenience of one–stop shopping with affordable essentials, on–trend fashions and exclusive designer collections guests expect to find in a typical Target store.

Hello, Canada!

In 2011, Target acquired 189 Zellers sites across Canada, and we’re planning to renovate between 125-135 of them to become Target stores in the future. As we prepare to open the new stores, our list of stores is always growing, so check back often to get the latest scoop on our plans. Since construction can be affected by many things, including the weather, dates of store openings are subject to change.
